8 Easy Steps to Plan Your Kids Party in Singapore

PLANNING YOUR KID”S BIRTHDAY PARTY

By Christie Xu

“It”s my kid”s birthday in a month”s time and I have no idea on how to get started!” Over the course of our work, we have heard these screams of agonies from many of our beloved customers. As such, we hope to share with fellow mummies and daddies a little of our party planning experience that will hopefully help the next time you plan a party. Most of the context here is relevant for readers staying in Singapore, if you happen to find this article useful, earn a karma point by sharing it on FB! 🙂

Step 1 – Pick a Venue

Picking the venue of a party is the first and most important step of planning a party!

Home

If you are going to hold the party at a house, make sure that you have a space big enough all the activities going around. Be sure to clean the house before the party to ensure that the guests will be comfortable. An empty 40sqm living room (average singapore living room) should be enough to accommodate a cozy party of 20 kids and 30 guests.

Childcares and schools

A childcare or school is the most fuss-free location to hold your kid’s birthday party; no booking or money is needed, you do not have to worry about attendance of the little ones. All you’ve got to do is to check with the teachers when would be a good time to hold the party. Parties held here are usually short (1 hr – 1.5hr).

Function rooms

Condominium function rooms are the most popular venue for birthday parties, and booking of function rooms are mostly free of charge! Do ensure that the activities planned are able to fit in the function room especially if you”re getting a bouncy castle.

Common areas under HDB

If you are staying in a HDB and the living area is not big enough to accommodate all the guests that you are inviting, the common area under the HDB is the best way to go.  Once it”s booked, you will get access to the power-points and water-points.  The booking fee varies from areas to areas; the range is around $20 – $100 per day depending on the venue. Bookings can only be made 3 months prior to the event date.  For example the earliest you can book for a party on 1st April is 1st Jan. I always advise my clients to book the areas as early as possible as they are hot spots to hold parties, weddings and events etc, and it is based on a first come first serve basis.

Other spaces available for rental

If you are holding a grand party that the house or function rooms can’t accommodate, or are planning a last minute party and all the spaces available are fully booked, don’t worry. You can always check out restaurants and cafes or hotel function rooms! Many restaurants do offer the place for free when you order their food catering! 🙂 PartyMojo do work with a few venue partners and we do help you to book the venues if our services are booked.

Step 2 – Choose a Theme

The next step to planning a party is to choose a theme, which is easy as every child has a favourite character from movies or cartoons. Most importantly, let the birthday child choose the party theme! Confused about party themes? Too many favourite cartoon characters? Check out our Themed Party Packages here to find out more!

Things that brings out a theme in parties includes:

Decoration

Decorate the room with lots of helium balloons! Helium balloons are the perfect decoration for all kinds of themes or occasions. Choosing colours is easy too.  You would just have to choose theme coloured balloons. For example, a superhero party would need red, blue and yellow balloons. Some special printed balloons like the polka dot balloons are nice too. My favourite kind of helium balloon is a giant themed foil balloon bouquet that brings out the theme and looks super pretty, especially when it comes to photo taking. You can check out our decoration packages here for more idea on how the room would look like.

Dress code

Nothing brings out a party theme better than getting your guests to come in themed costumes! Do check out out themed packages where we make themed capes for the little ones at the parties here!

Face paint / Balloon sculpting

Here”s the tip, get princess face paint and a balloon tiara! Or a Thor face paint with a balloon hammer!

Customised Goodie bags

This is a must in a themed party, and it gets the kids very excited! Contact us to add it to your packages, prices starts from $5/bag. 🙂

Step 3 – Decide on a Budget

Now that we”ve come to the third step of planning a party, we have to decide on a budget. Is it going to be a grand party with a 3m x 2m balloon arch, fine catering and 200 guests, or a small simple party with entertainment only for the kids to enjoy? I know it”s always tempting to throw super extravagant parties but it is very important to spend within the budget. Small parties can look awesome too! Do let us know your budget so we can work within it and plan your next rocking kids party! 🙂

Step 4 – Create a Guest List

Plan a party step 4: decide on how many children to invite. Kids party might get a little out of hand when there are too much kids and too little party entertainers (we all know how overly excited kids can get). The golden ratio of party entertainer/helper to kid is 2:15 ratio. If you want to invite more kids, be sure that there are more party assistants to keep an eye on the children!

Step 5 – Send out Invitation Cards

After you get the guest list out, it”s time to mail the invitations! You can approach party stores all over Singapore to get special themed invitation cards. There are many websites offering printable cards where you can customise the cards and print them at home! If you do not have a printer at home, you can go to Queensway Shopping Centre or Bras bash Shopping Centre where many printing shops are available at low price! 🙂

Step 6 – Birthday Cake Time

The birthday cake cutting is the crowning moment of every birthday party, therefore choosing the right cake is essential for a successful birthday party! Fondant cakes are very popular now with kids as they can be in any shape you want! Contact us if you require any help in sourcing for a good bakery! 🙂

Step 7 – Find Awesome Party Food

Having good party food is crucial to running a successful party. You can always keep it simple by ordering pizza, or you can call up some food caterers. The most common caterers that we’ve seen at parties so far are  Neo Garden (reliable and reputable catering in Singapore) or orange clove! For Halal, we do recommend Delihub as well for affordable and great tasting promotional menu.

Step 8 – Plan Exciting Activities for the Birthday Party!

You do not have to organise very complicated games as simpler ones would be sufficient in entertaining the little ones. For aged 2-3 years old, you can play simple games like pass the parcels, singing games, play dough. A bouncy castle would be great. For 4-6 years old, you can play more exciting games like blow wind blow, tag games, musical statues, musical chairs and so on. Other activities can include art and craft, magic show, themed activities and so on. For 7-9 years old, you might want to make the games more competitive.

And now, its time to browse through our website for super awesome party packages! Have fun! :)
